Dear Family,
September 11th is an important part of our nation's history, and while it can be difficult to teach, it is a story worth remembering. This unit was created to help families thoughtfully explore the events of 9/11 while placing an emphasis on courage, compassion, service, and hope.
Together, you'll learn about the events of September 11th, explore the history and geography surrounding the Middle East, discover how countries around the world came alongside the United States after the attacks, and learn how travel and security changed in the years that followed.
Children will also explore the engineering of the Twin Towers, study child-friendly photographs from 9/11 and its aftermath, learn about the heroes who helped, practice important vocabulary and copywork, interview someone about their memories of 9/11, and use thoughtful journaling prompts to reflect on what they've learned.
Hands-on projects include creating a 9/11 remembrance banner, learning to draw the Twin Towers, exploring how TSA changed air travel, and creating a personal 9/11 Memorial.
Most importantly, this unit gives families an opportunity to remember those who were lost, honor those who served, and consider how we can continue to love our neighbors and show courage and kindness in difficult times.
